The Commercial Director (Board Director Designate) will champion a new thinking and shift in emphasis with respect to the management of all product groups and categories and will in essence be accountable for the retail proposition.  He/she will be the custodian of the key strategic responsibility of influencing management thinking with respect to category management and margin management and will direct and organize the trading function - responding to changes in shopper and consumer behaviour in a structured and measurable manner.  He/she will be responsible for raising the bar with respect to consumer insight, innovation and category development in its broadest sense.  In essence, the incumbent will focus on marshalling the resources of the function so that they meet the needs of a converging and changing retail landscape.  It is about delivering solutions that ensure profitable growth across all product areas and categories.

 
Our client is seeking to appoint an experienced trading director with strong category management capabilities, coupled with strategic ability, people skills, communication skills and the courage, integrity and decisiveness to fill this key role. Reporting to the Managing Director, the successful candidate will be a high-achieving category specialist with considerable experience of providing leadership, ideally from within a major multiple retailing environment. He/she will ultimately sit on the board and will have the ability to provide commercial and strategic input at this level. Candidates will have prior experience of translating strategies into defined goals and delivering change and best practice across all categories.
 
Candidates will have worked in a multiple or multi-site retailing environment where there has been an emphasis on growth and real change. Most importantly, candidates must be able to demonstrate a clear track record of working in a senior role where they have championed best in class category management. Success in the role will be measured in bottom line achievement and the delivery of the long-term growth strategy of the client group. Candidates must be adept at shaping and influencing the commercial agenda of the organisation, and they will also need to demonstrate a behavioural fit that is consistent with the client’s market leading objectives. An emphasis will be placed on the creation of an atmosphere of partnership throughout the supply-chain, which provides profitable returns for all stakeholders.
